Chapter 8

When Joel arrived home late that evening, the dogs were stretched out in front of the TV, while Andrea was sitting cross-legged on the couch, a bowl of Doritos in her lap, a half-eaten bar of chocolate in one hand, and a fierce scowl on her brow. Despite that, he couldn’t stop his heart constricting at the sight of her. With her hair frazzled and that wild scowl, she looked like she wanted to kill someone, yet she triggered a visceral need in him to hold her. A need he had to rein in at the moment, judging by her expression.

“What’s with the murderous look on your face?” he asked, standing in front of her.

“I want to murder that thing.” She pointed a finger at her laptop sitting on the coffee table. “Only it’s already died on me. Happened after I’d walked the dogs and decided to put in some solid hours tonight.”

“Let me have a look.” He sat next to her and examined the laptop.

“It’s a goner, isn’t it?” she said after he’d unsuccessfully tried to revive it for several minutes.

“Yep. But it was a crappy old thing anyway. It’s probably outlived its usefulness.”

“Not for me.” She pressed her lips together, and a suspicion of moisture shone in her eyes. “It was essential to me.”

He wanted to put his arm around her, but the fierce look returned to her face, warning him off. “Did you lose all your work?”

“No, thank God, or I’d be having kittens by now. By good fortune I backed up my manuscript last Friday onto a thumb drive, which I’m now guarding with my life.”

He picked up his laptop bag from the floor and set it on the coffee table. “You can use mine until you get a replacement.”

“Yours?” Her brow wrinkled. “But I can’t do that. You need your laptop for your work.”

“I don’t need it tonight, and I can get a spare from the office tomorrow.”

“No, I can’t.” Her mouth set in a stubborn line, which only drew his attention to her lips. He’d been thinking about her lips all day. Now, he wanted to kiss them and soothe away her irritations.

He unzipped the bag and opened his laptop. “Give me your thumb drive.”

“Why? What do you want with it?” She pressed a hand over the pocket of her T-shirt, easily giving away where the thumb drive was.

“I’m going to upload your files to my cloud storage. That way, your work will be safe even if you lose the thumb drive.” He eyed the position of her pocket. It lay over her right breast. Heat stirred in his groin. “If you don’t give me the thumb drive, I’ll happily search you for it.”

She gave him a look, then handed him the thumb drive without a word and watched on as he copied the files to his cloud account. When he was finished, he pulled out the thumb drive and handed it back to her.

“There. It’s safe now. You should set up your own cloud storage and back up your manuscript.
